Methacrylate signs: three projects with the Atheon CO2 Laser CNC machine
Signage made from methacrylate or acrylic is one of the best options for creating durable, elegant and attractive signs. In this article, Alberto Inarejos from 'Crear Más y Mejor' shows you how to create three different designs using NomadTech's Atheon CO2 Laser cutter and engraver. Simple sign combining laser marking and cutting
The first project is perfect for interior decoration, standing out for its ease and speed of manufacturing. An ideal design for offices or commercial spaces aiming for an elegant and minimalist aesthetic.
What you need for the simple sign:
- 3 mm thick methacrylate sheets in black and white colours.
- Cyanoacrylate adhesive.
Once the white and black methacrylate have been cut to size, the key is marking the position of the letters on the white piece using low power and high speed. The Atheon CO2 Laser, with its 60 W power, ensures fast and precise cutting, achieving clean edges and defined details. After cutting the letters from the black acrylic, using high power and low speed, they are fixed to the white methacrylate base with small drops of cyanoacrylate.
Backlit signage: the lightbox
The next sign is perfect for businesses and venues that need night-time visibility. Easy to install and attractive for any front.
What you need for the lightbox:
- 3 mm thick methacrylate sheets in black and white colours.
- LED strips.
- 3 mm thick MDF board.
- Brackets.
- Utility knife.
We follow the same process to mark and cut the white acrylic front –slightly larger to accommodate the logo, marked with high power and low speed–. To position the letters accurately, we use the methacrylate piece from which they were cut as a template. The frame is built by gluing black acrylic strips at a 90° angle, using brackets for support and removing any excess with a utility knife. The backlighting is achieved by installing an LED strip on the MDF base and securing the front box with transparent acrylic supports, resulting in a durable and professional finish.

3D letters: volume and professionalism
The third sign is the perfect choice for shop windows seeking greater presence and visibility. Additionally, 3D letters can include backlighting to create even more impact.
What you need for the 3D letters:
- 3 mm thick methacrylate sheets in black and white colours.
- Heat gun.
- Thermal gloves.
- Utility knife.
Cut the front of the first letter from white acrylic; the black methacrylate side pieces, once cut, are heated and shaped to fit the letter’s contour. The pieces are glued with cyanoacrylate to ensure a firm bond. After completing the volume of the letter, any excess material is trimmed with a utility knife. At this stage, the backlighting option seen in the previous sign can be added.
